About Me
Hello!
My name is Asami. I am a certified BASI Mat Pilates Instructor.
I’m originally from Japan and I relocated to Montreal, Quebec from Vancouver, BC in October 2024 with my husband.
My Pilates journey began not too long ago, however, my body has already known about it for a quite long time.
I have been practicing classical ballet since I was a child. I was a girl who fell in love with ballet and loved it so much. I had never thought in a million years I would fall in love with other sports or dances, or even continuing ballet as a part of my hobbies.
I found the word ‘Pilates’ on YouTube in 2020. That time of the year the whole world had changed and shifted lifestyles for many people, learning and partaking in more home exercises, and I was looking for something for myself that I could do at home with the little space I had. I found a quick 10-minute YouTube Pilates class, and right then and there it opened up a whole new world for me.
I was shocked by the short video, since I felt like I was already familiar with Pilates movements. This feeling came due to the stretching class that all students participated in before starting the barre portion of the classical ballet class at the studio where I learned ballet in Japan.
Stretching before barre class was pretty normal for me and I took it for granted and it was just the routine when I was at the ballet studio.
The reason why I didn’t know it was Pilates was that my ballet teachers simply called it “warm-up” or “Stretching”.
Since I found out that Pilates is not a modified ballet style, I started taking more Pilates classes and I gradually shifted from classical ballet to Pilates. During my Pilates journey, I had a wonderful Pilates community and they inspired and motivated me to consider teacher training. Soon enough I signed up for the BASI Pilates Mat training course. At the beginning of the training course, I still remember I told the BASI facilities that I just wanted to take the teacher training course for a deeper understanding of Pilates and I didn’t think about it any further than that. However, as more time passed learning Pilates and teaching friends and family, my mindset had shifted naturally and I felt that teaching Pilates is quite fun and rewarding and could very well be something I wish to pursue further not just for personal reasons.
This is why I am here now: to teach my newfound favorite, Pilates.
On the other hand, I have a background in Early Childhood Education, in both Japan and Canada. In addition, I experienced a lower back injury. It was one of the most painful experiences in my life, however, Pilates was part of my rehab and when I recovered from it, Mat Pilates kept my body stronger to prevent injury.
I hope you got to know me a little bit about my Pilates background and my life experiences.
I can’t wait to connect with you and I am thrilled to meet you and become a part of your Pilates journey.
See you on the mat,
Asami
